TGIM: Thank God It’s Monday! 4/26/2010

My Lakers lost Saturday night in a way that redefines “lost”.  Hard to describe how bad those boys looked – NBA defending champions on the wrong end of a 21-point final score spread. They were stupefyingly awful and the Oklahoma City Thunders were unrecognizably fabulous. What happened?

I get a lot of good visionbuilding lessons watching basketball.  Saturday’s debacle gave me two to share with you for our week as visionbuilders:

1.) Be an objective observer. Objective observers can enjoy and appreciate any moment – free of judgments and emotional reactions.  If my team is losing, I try to appreciate each play and each player. I try to enjoy the basketball ballet– the athleticism, the choreography, the teamwork.  A better person could do better than “try”, but when my team is getting creamed, my worst self surfaces. I lose my objectivity and with it my enjoyment of the game and my peace of mind.  Objective observers make powerful Visionbuilders because they stay at peace and focused on their vision, no matter what.

2.) Never underestimate the power of Vision. Oklahoma City needed something good to happen.  Last week marked the 15-year anniversary of their federal building bombing.  I’ve seen the memorial and it’s powerful-168 empty chairs, including child-size ones, one for each death.

The Thunders were the lowest rated basketball team in the playoffs, hardly inspiring. But the Thunders had a vision   of victory and a city  needing something to believe in. That city responded. Fans overflowed the stadium, dressed in team white and screamed deafening cheers of     support. (The LA Times said no Thunder fans cared about looking cool.)  Oklahoma City provided its team an energy and emotional context  that created unstoppable visionbuilding power. Wanting your vision passionately and believing in it can do the same for you.

I’m dedicating my week to being an objective observer and staying in the passion of my biggest vision.  Join me? TGIM – Thank God it’s Monday! Shine on…

Love,

Margaret
